Full Text

Yesterday afternoon two of our pilot-boats, Mr. Kelly's and Mr. Waldron's, narrowly escaped being taken, about E. from this bar, by a privateer sloop that came down upon them from the north east. Mr. Kelly's boat being farthest to windward, was pretty near before he discovered what she was; she shewed abundance of men, but no guns, tho' she might mount 10 or 12, was a long low vessel, with black sides and brown bottom, and had a large New-England built schooner under her stern, with very few Hands on board, supposed to be a prize. It was about one o'clock when she chased Kelly; at half past one, there being little wind, she hoisted out a barge and sent after her and would certainly have taken her had Waldron not soon appeared, whose boat was much the largest. Upon this the privateer fired a gun to call off her boat from the then present chase, shifted the hands in her, and both sloop and boat chased Mr. Waldron within a mile of the shore, till night & a squall at S. E. came on. Mr. Waldron was obliged to throw a great part of his ballast overboard, and after dark saw the sloop make several false fires for her boat. The schooner followed the sloop during the whole time.

Event Details

A privateer sloop chased Mr. Kelly's pilot-boat starting around one o'clock, deploying a barge. Mr. Waldron's larger boat appeared, prompting the privateer to shift chase, firing a gun and pursuing both within a mile of shore until night and an S.E. squall. Waldron jettisoned ballast to escape; sloop used false fires for its boat. The sloop had a suspected prize schooner in tow.
