HARTFORD COMPANY WILL NOT INSURE THEM—ONE TRIP MAY BE TAKEN, HOWEVER, WITHOUT WAIVER.
"Habitual aviators, according to a letter of instruction issued yesterday to the agents of the Travelers Insurance company, of Hartford, must join the ranks of automobile racers, sand hogs and others whom the insurance companies decline to accept as risks.
It is thought that the action of the Travelers' company will soon be followed by other insurance companies.
The letter of instructions to agents is in part as follows:
"The hazard of operating or riding in aeroplanes and flying machines is not insurable as an accidental risk, and those insured with us indulging in this form of sport must be asked to carry their own risk by the execution of a special waiver, or surrender their policies.
The same instruction applies to those who indulge frequently in ballooning.
Concerning those who take one balloon trip, with no expectation of repeating the experience, we will not require waiver for that trip, but if another one or more are to be made, the waiver must be executed, or the policy cancelled."
This is the first time, it is said, that any insurance company has recognized the air ship and the balloon as important diversion of contemporary life.
