On Sunday the 9th June, a banditti of negroes, mulattoes, and whites, armed with cutlasses and bludgeons, attacked without provocation, a number of American sailors, mates and masters, among which the mate of the brig Caroline, Williams, of this port, was dangerously stabbed; that the Americans, on hearing of the transaction, repaired to the place where they were surrounded by the burgher guard, and all imprisoned, among which were all the seamen, masters, and passengers belonging to Baltimore vessels; they were kept in close confinement for 24 hours, when some of the officers were released. That the governor refused any explanation of the reasons for making the attack. That after addressing to him such a petition as he pleased to dictate, the captains were released, after paying 500 dollars, and expenses, amounting to 90 dollars each. Capt. Beatty has put into our possession a particular detail of the whole transaction, drawn up and signed by the masters, which, from the late hour on which it was received must be deferred until to-morrow.
