PUGILIST IN SONG
The following poem is by Jack McAuliffe, late K. of C. secretary, and the only undefeated lightweight champion pugilist in the world. It is the only poem on record by a prize-fighter:
The Knights of Columbus.
When Democracy was threatened,
And each one paid the price,
By doing work laid out for them,
With sufferings and sacrifice.
Some made the ammunition for the
Boys who shouldered guns,
While others gave relief to the sick
And crippled ones.
The Red Cross work is noted for its
Efficiency and skill
By aiding shocked and shattered
Minds
To control their nerves and will.
The Jewish Welfare League will live
For their kind, unselfish deeds.
They always lend assistance to the
Sons of other creeds.
The Y. M. C. A. did wonders, too, in
This and other climes,
By cheering frail, dejected lads who
Were homesick many times.
The Salvation Army's noble bands
Have won eternal fame,
For valor shown on battlefields
Immortalized its name!
Still there's another legion that never
Asked for pay,
The bold Knights of Columbus, kings
Of charity's array!
And they were on the firing line when
Our boys were falling fast
And oft they quenched the thirst
Of him
Who was gasping out his last.
They never thought of danger, they
Had
Duties to perform,
Their object was to comfort souls
In bodies that were warm.
The K. of C. oft gave what's dear,
His life, his limb; his all;
His only thought was to save the
Wounded who would fall,
For he knew some woman waited for
That man with aching heart,
And he pictured anguished tears of
Grief
Which helped him play his part.
Thank God the war is over, 'tis a page
In history,
But when glorifying units, don't
Forget the K. of C.
