Associated Press Dispatch.
New York, April 22.—Having withstood violent German infantry attacks, the Americans northwest of Toul have driven the enemy from positions and held out against the Germans, but the enemy succeeded in occupying advanced elements from which they were ejected Sunday. To the east French lines have also been re-established. Indications are that the Germans intended to make an attack and start an effort to separate the American and French troops. The Germans did not attempt to renew their attacks Sunday. Violent artillery fire preceded Saturday's engagement.
Two German airplanes were brought down by American machine gunners.
A Berlin official statement claimed 183 Americans were captured. The statement describes the action lengthily, and admits the fighting was severe. That their effort failed is indicated by the announcement that the attackers returned to their own positions under cover of night. The Germans did not resume their attacks on Picardy and Flanders battlefields, and presumably are awaiting reinforcements.
Meanwhile French troops are pouring in to aid the British.
