MISCELLANEOUS REPOSITORY.
From the Chronicle.
The following lines were composed for the Roxbury Charitable Society, and sung at their anniversary, September 21, 1807.
HYMN TO BENEVOLENCE.
BENEVOLENCE, thou sacred aid,
And attribute of God;
May thy blest influence still pervade
Affliction's dark abode.
O'er this perplexed world of care,
Thy torch effulgent gleams;
And pours a heavenly radiance there,
Like Sol's diffusive beams.
When frigid Winter cheerless reigns,
Amidst a waste of snows;
Thy aid the wanderer's step sustains,
And vernal sweets disclose.
Or, when the mortal Notus flies
Malignant o'er the land,
Thou bid'st the cooling Zephyrs rise,
And Health its joys expand.
Thy genial influence soothes the breast
Of many a wretch forlorn;
And forms a downy bed of rest,
For ages yet unborn.
What nobler meed, on earth's abode,
Can feeble mortals claim?
Thus Howard marched through misery's road,
To everlasting fame!
The bounteous gift—the widow's mite,
Are registered in heaven;
And promised years of pure delight,
A righteous God has given.
