LONDON, Dec. 20.—The official announcement that large bodies of troops are about to be withdrawn from the Gallipoli peninsula is believed to presage the abandonment of the attempt of the allies to win their way to Constantinople through the Dardanelles. The statement of the war office admits that the British troops in the Suvla and Anzac districts have been withdrawn and will be transferred to other points outside of the Gallipoli district.
It is stated that part of the allied forces will leave at once for Salonika and the remainder to Egypt. As the forces lately occupying the districts named represent the larger portion of the British forces on Gallipoli it is believed that their withdrawal means nothing less than that the campaign will be abandoned as the remaining force of British and French troops will be utterly inadequate to operate effectively against the powerful Turkish army opposing their advance. Military critics are today pointing out that the abandonment of the Gallipoli campaign will release at least two hundred and fifty thousand Turkish soldiers thus greatly increasing the effectiveness of the armies operating at other points.
