On Klan Battle
Says America Must
Get Rid Of Klan Or
It Will Destroy Us
America must get rid of the
Klan before it gets rid of
America.
This unequivocal
warning is
sounded by the nation's foremost
antagonist of the Klan. Governor
Ellis Arnall of Georgia, writing in
the October issue of Coronet, to be
released September 25. His article
called My Battle Against the
Klan.
Governor Arnall, who reveals
how he himself has been threat-
ened with assassination by the
Klan in training his guns on what
he terms a dangerous native Fas-
cist group. Although this winter
he will give up his office, Governor
Arnall and his administration are
now attempting to take the Klans-
men in Georgia to the place "they
are most reluctant to go-the court
room, where impartial judges and
juries can look underneath the
mask and see who is hiding there."
The history of the Klan, how the
Kloran Klavern Klektoken, Klap-
trap Kleagle Kavaler Klub and
other "K" titles were first devised
by William J. Simmons in the
hope of making a dollar or two out
of the folks who wanted to play
dress up, and how several times
the Klan was forced into a shallow
grave only to naturally re-
bury and revive it white sheeted
horrors reviewed by Governor
Arnall.
DOMINATES SALES
Talking about this early battles
with the Klan, Governor Arnall
says: "It exerted enough power in
Georgia for example, for the Im-
perial Wizard Dr. Hiram Wesley
Evans, to dominate the sale of as-
phalt to the State Highway Depart-
ment for several years. Dr. Evans
and several oil companies, for
which he acted as bidding agent,
paid fines in the U.S. District
Court on an anti-trust indictment
and later as Attorney-General, I
brought suit and compelled them
to disgorge some of their extra
profits to the State."
The Klan came back to life this
year writes Governor Arnall, as
Georgia moved toward its cam-
paigns for Governor. "One of the
candidates seized upon the fact
that Negroes would vote for the
first time in many years in the
Democratic primary, where nomi-
nation is the equivalent to election.
He reduced his campaign to the
simple formula of yelling 'Nigger!
Nigger!' from the stump. The Klan
came back to life.
Already it had shown signs of
reviving in adjacent Tennessee,
where it had absorbed the rem-
nants of the Silver Shirts, and in
Michigan, where the Black Shirts
had been powerful and sinister.
In Georgia, too, the East Point
and Oakland City Klaverns began
to do business again."
Summing up his determination to
kill off the Klan in Georgia, Gov-
ernor Arnall warns, "Do not be fool-
ed by a belief that the Klan is
nothing more than a minor mani-
festation of violence. The Black-
shirts, the Brownshirts and the
