Chief Executive Desires To Learn Exact Financial Status Of Organization Before the contracts are awarded on the bridge contracts which were recently opened in Key West, it will be necessary to await auditing of the books of the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge Commission.
This announcement yesterday by members of the commission who said that this is being done pursuant to instructions received from Governor Fred Cone who is desirous of ascertaining the exact financial status of the commission and has delegated the work to the auditing department of the state.
This audit, it is said, is not part of the Governor keeping well informed of activities of boards and commissions,
Pending completion of the audit investigation the commission has been instructed by the governor to limit all expenditures to $61,000. This order does not affect work on projects financed by the federal appropriation.
Called For Conference
Governor Cone, on which last Saturday, called for a conference of the members of the commission with the toll department, feeling the best way to get to the bottom of the situation was to familiarize himself with what the commission has done and is doing was to hold a conference.
The principal object of this conference was to enable the Governor to determine the state's financial responsibility in the project.
The governor said it was said, that State Department was not in any way involved.
Some time ago it was rumored some of the members of the commission were to request resignation of the governor.
That such request had been made has been denied by members of the commission contacted by The Citizen, and the only member who has resigned did so voluntarily.
Wilson Resigns
This is Wilson, who stated in his resignation that he worked for four years as a member of the body, without compensation or expense account, and now that work had progressed to the point where contracts have been let for the greater part of the work and the rest in shape for contracts being let, he felt he had done his duty and should be relieved of the responsibility.
Whether or not the resignation has been accepted by the governor was not announced.
