LONDON, Oct. 16. In consequence of a report yesterday, (about half past two o'clock) that the Dutch men of war at the mouth of the Scheldt had fired three broadsides into an Imperial vessel, which was attempting to go up that river to Antwerp, the merchants at Change were greatly alarmed, and the stocks fell one half per cent. but the most judicious and intelligent, among the Dutch merchants, look upon the whole as a trifling matter, and view it in a different light from what the stock-jobbers at Jonathan's do. Other accounts state, that the affair of the Dutch stopping a ship from Antwerp in going down the Scheldt, is by no means as the foreign gazette has related it: The vessel did return back to Antwerp, but not for the causes there mentioned, but on account of being too heavily laden to pass the bar, which is on that river. The intelligence of the return of the Imperial ship to Antwerp appeared as it most properly happened, in our paper of Wednesday; it was stated, that the ship put back without being either fired into or allowed a passage by the Dutch frigates. It is not usual to fire at once into a ship, but to direct a shot a-head, to signify that she must proceed no further.

Event Details

Report of Dutch men of war firing three broadsides into an Imperial vessel attempting to go up the Scheldt to Antwerp caused alarm among merchants and a half percent drop in stocks. Judicious Dutch merchants viewed it as trifling. Other accounts clarify the vessel was stopped while going down the Scheldt, returned to Antwerp not due to firing but heavy load, unable to pass the bar. Initial paper reported the ship put back without being fired into or allowed passage by Dutch frigates. Firing at ships usually involves a warning shot ahead.
