ATTEND TRADE SCHOOL
Law Passed Recently Affecting Every Alien Child.

By Special Correspondent.

TOTTENVILLE, Sept. 5—An important law recently enacted requires all foreigners under the age of twenty-one years, both men and women, boys and girls, to register at the nearest evening school and take up the study of English. Thus every alien minor is compelled by law to attend some school, to learn to read and write English, and to become acquainted with the customs, institutions and ideals of this country.

It seems but a question of time before all foreigners will be included in this law, irrespective of age limits. The reasons for the enactment of such a law at this time are obvious. Millions of foreigners, it has been found, do not know how to read and write the language of this country. When war broke out, it was found that many did not understand the ideals for which we are fighting. Many soldiers in camp did not understand commands issued in the language of the country in which they had been living for years.

The country must be made safe for Americans. There must be one language and that English, one class of people and that American.

If you know of any foreigner in your neighborhood, shop, factory, or plant, it is your duty to call his attention to this new law.

The Tottenville Evening Trade School offers a complete course in Americanization for foreigners. The course will be the first of its kind in New York City and will enable the foreigner who completes it not only to read, write, speak and understand our language, but to apply for and secure his naturalization papers.

The text-books used will be entirely new and are the work of the principal of the school, Mr. I. David Cohen, who is well-known as a specialist in this work.

The Tottenville Evening Trade School is open four evenings each week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 7:30 to 9:30 p. m. It is under the direct supervision of the Department of Education of the City of New York.

All tuition, supplies and equipment are furnished absolutely free. All instruction is given by experts appointed by the Board of Education of the City of New York.
