Why Secretary Lamar Didn't Put in a Democrat.
Washington, Dec. 30.—C. E. Dailey, recently appointed Registrar of the land office at Tucson, Arizona, assumed his office. Dailey was appointed Receiver of Public Moneys by President Hayes and was removed by President Arthur. His appointment caused much feeling in Arizona. Democrats throughout the Territory protested, as he was a bitter partisan Republican. Many prominent Democrats of the Territory were applicants. Dailey is a resident of Washington City. Upon being interviewed he stated that he was a Republican, and that Secretary Lamar knew it. United States Marshal Meade and C. A. Elliot, of Tucson, stated that Lamar had said to them that one strong point in Dailey's favor was his hostility to the Cameron land interests in Arizona, and through him he believed that the Government would be protected. The land interest referred to is the San Rafael Spanish land grant, owned principally by Senator Don Cameron, which covers several square leagues of land with several thousand head of stock thereon.
