June 18.

We have received letters to the 20th ult. from our brother, from which we have made the following extract --the wounded and those otherwise indisposed, were rapidly recovering:

"Yesterday arrived in Camp. Four Americans who formerly lived at Detroit. They took a boat from the fort and made their escape. They inform us, that the others are holding councils among themselves separate from the British. It is supposed they intend making peace or are going to their respective tribes. They are now much dissatisfied. King Fort Meigs. The legion are quite down when [OCR garbled].

Some shot hit fire on the Queen Charlotte went off a couple and a half or two after they heard some report to the fleet. They calculate she has had a battle and apprehensions are entertained for her safety. A signal had been fired from the fort for her to come in, but previous to the departure of these men from Detroit, she had not arrived at Malden. These men also add that provisions are very scarce at Detroit and Malden--that if they had had provisions sufficient, they could have besieged Fort Meigs two or three weeks earlier, continued it much longer. They all say that the Indians always after an action stretch the scalps they have taken on a small hoop, and fix them upon a long pole come with five, others with seven, and some with more or less, and pass through the streets yelling at the prizes they have made--much after the late battle, they had very few scalps among them, and passed about, apparently quite dejected. The Americans bought a great number of their prisoners from them--they sold some for 5 dollars, others for 50, and some for 100--they bartered others for groceries, and some they have whom they take a liking to, and adopt them, and there they will not part with upon any terms.
