VERNE R. PETTY WELL KNOWN IN THIS SECTION

News That He Had Been Commended for Bravery Recalls His Friends Here.

Verne R. Petty, of Ketchikan, who was commended for bravery by Secretary Daniels yesterday, is well known all over Southeastern Alaska. For several months Petty was here and acted as engineer on the Prince of Wales. He is a Native-born boy, having been born and raised in Ketchikan where he has hundreds of acquaintances and friends. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Petty. He is a member of the Naval Reserves, having enlisted in the service when the call for gas boat men first went out. He has been engaged in gas boat engineering for several years past and for several months acted in that capacity on the Forestry Boat Tahn.
