The expenses of Diplomatic Intercourse,
For 1828, $149,000
For 1829, 137,500
Two years of Mr. Adams, $286,500
For 1830, $214,500
For 1831, 210,000
Two years of Gen. Jackson, $424,500
Excess in 1830 and 1831, $138,000
The appropriation now proposed for the same expenditures, in the year 1832, is $236,150, wanting but fifty thousand dollars of the whole sum appropriated for similar purposes in both the years 1828 and 1829.
Gen. Smith, of Maryland, said "these things looked bad on paper; still they might not be quite so bad as they appeared!" There is no telling what becomes of so much money-in times when the administration requires so much secret service money, and so many subsidies to sustain it.
