During the Month

Pneumonia caused more deaths--six in all--than any other ailment during December in Vance county, the vital statistics report of the county health department showed today.

Kidney and heart diseases and tuberculosis each caused three deaths during the month, however, to rank in second place.

Two deaths were listed as due to old age, and one each attributed to homicide, still birth, paralysis, suicide, fractured skull, train, and pellagra, while two were ascribed to "other causes."

In all there were 26 deaths during December, as compared with 58 births, three of which were listed as illegitimate.

Henderson township led in both births, with 31, and deaths, with 17: Twenty-two of these births were white and nine colored, and 19 were males and 12 females, while doctors were present at 27 of them and only midwives at four. For the county as a whole the 58 births included 30 white and 28 colored, and 33 of the total were males and 25 females. Doctors attended 36 and midwives 22 for the county as a whole. Middleburg and Kittrell townships reported eight births each, Nutbush 5, Townsville 3 and Williamsboro 2, and Dabney one.

Of the 17 deaths in Henderson township, nine were white and eight colored people, and eleven were males and six females. Of the 26 deaths in the county as a whole, 12 were white and 14 colored, and 12 were male and 14 females. Middleburg and Kittrell townships had three deaths each, Dabney two and Townsville one.

Five deaths under one year of age and five between 70 and 80 years were reported. There were four between 30 and 40 years, three each between 40 and 50; 50 and 60; and over 80. One death occurred between 60 and 70 years of age, and there were no deaths at all in the decades from one to 20 years.
