Emperor Sees Folly In Sacrifice Says World Will Have No Peace Without Justice
NEW YORK-(ANP) Warning that the world has seen the folly of sacrificing world peace Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia last week made a plea for justice for all in forthcoming peace settlements.
The emperor's statement, issued thru Ethiopian representatives here on the anniversary of the Italian attack on his country May 5, 10 years ago, recalled that for five years his people had only their faith in the righteousness of the cause of justice to withstand the losses suffered. The statement said in part:
"It was when the struggle had to be pursued in the face of events and obstacles crying forth the futility of resistance, when the fight had to be waged on conviction and perseverance alone, that moral support proved of incalculable worth.
VALUE TO CAUSE "The asylum offered us by the British nation during the long and bitter years, the stand of non-recognition by the United States China, the Soviet Union and others, the devoted efforts of patriots foreign as well as Ethiopian in the darkest hour of our 3,000 years of national history, have been of inestimable value to our cause
"Finally, our efforts and those of other United Nations have been rewarded with success. Five years ago today, and five years to the day after the entry of the aggressor, at the head of our victorious army and with the heroic support of the British forces we reentered the capital of our empire. Yet at what cost and by what sacrifices as our common victory has been achieved and what still remains before peace may be won.
"On the eve of the peace settlement, let us have the courage to recognize that in a peace without justice there shall be neither peace nor justice."
