Powell Denies His Secretary Paid Her Money As Alimony

NEW YORK—(UPI)—Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., D-N.Y., Thursday denied at his trial on income tax evasion charges that his congressional secretary had used her own money to pay alimony to Powell's first wife.

The attempt of government counsel to wring such an admission from the Negro congressman promptly brought a motion for a mistrial from chief defense Attorney Edward Bennett Williams.

Federal Judge Frederick Vanpelt Bryan denied the motion.

Powell had testified that he left $1,400 with his secretary, Mrs. Hattie Freeman Dodson, shortly before he left for Europe in August, 1951, with his wife, Hazel Scott, the pianist. The money, he said, was to be used for alimony payments coming due to his first wife, Isabel Washington.

money with Mrs. Dodson before leaving on the tour?" Asst. U. S. Attorney Morton S. Robson asked.

"I just testified that I did," Powell replied.

"Isn't it a fact that the money she paid for alimony came from her salary as your congressional secretary?"

"Of course not!" Powell indignantly explained.

Defense Attorney Williams leaped to his feet with an objection. He strode to the bench, followed by Robson. Williams then made his motion for a mistrial which was turned down by the court.
