B. O S T O N. September 21.

Last Tuesday Capt. Darby arrived at Salem from Cadiz by whom we have the following Intelligence, viz.

That on the 12th of July last, Commodore Proby in the Thunder of 74 guns, with the Modeste of 64, the Thetis of 26, and the Terror bomb of 14, being all at an anchor without Cadiz bay, orders were sent to the Commodore from the governor of Cadiz to go to sea, or come into the bay amongst the other ships; but the Commodore choosing rather to keep the sea than to be confined to a harbour, he weighed and stood to sea, leaving the two French ships, viz. the Achilles of 64 guns, and Buffoon frigate of 34 guns, at anchor in the bay. On the 13th they stood in again for the Bay to take a view of the French ships as usual; but to their great surprise could see nothing of them. On which the commodore ordered Capt. Chinnery of the Terror to go right into the bay and see if he could discern them, which he did, but to no purpose and meeting with a Spanish fishing boat (suppos'd to be sent on purpose) who told them the French ships sail'd the night before, and stood to the S. W. tho' at the same time they had run up to the Caraccas, and struck their top masts. On hearing the ships had got out, the commodore immediately gave chase to the westward, with his little squadron. As soon as he was out of sight, the French got ready and sail'd the next night to the westward, keeping along the coast of Spain. On the 16th Capt. Proby, after giving over the chase, and standing to the eastward of Cape St. Marys, espied two sail, which they gave chase to; and about 11 at night the Thunder came up with the Achilles, and engaged about two glasses, when the Thunderer's tiller rope was shot away, and the two ships fell on board each other; and the French plying them with stink pots and small bags of powder, which they had prepared, and throwing them into the lower deck ports, blew up and burnt the Thunderer's People in a most shocking manner: On which, Lieut. Lefroy, with about 200 brave fellows boarded Monsieur and took him, with the Loss of 36 kill'd and upwards of 90 wounded. The French loss could not be rightly ascertained. In the mean time the Thetis engaged and took the Buffoon, without the loss of a man, altho' the engagement lasted nigh two hours. The French in the frigate was 15 kill'd, and a Number wounded. And on Saturday the 18th of July, they arrived safe at Gibraltar, to the great Joy of all the Garrison. The Buffoon is a new Frigate, launched at Brest about 10 Months ago; and were both fitted out by the Merchants to cruize on our Trade: and were the same Ships that took a Number of Vessels on the Coast of Portugal the last Spring.
