Great Number of Mexicans from This City And Surrounding Country Gathered For Conference With Consul.

GREAT THRONG OUT
TO MEET CONSUL

(Continued from Page One)

Sr. Pablo Campos Fermin Cortes
and LL.O. Arnold and O. Fabius
Brooks Invited guests

Senor Tavazoa in the main address
of the evening impressed his people
with the great opportunities their
country now affords for all with no
distinction as to class. The rich and
the poor will be treated alike he said
and the rights of the worker man shall
be guaranteed.

He recounted the untold wealth of
Mexico enumerating some of its out-
standing resources silver and other pre-
cious minerals and the enormous de-
posits of black gold oil which are
being used up every day. The wealth is there and
needs but the proper co-operation of
the people to get the most out of it.
The time is past, he declared, when
certain classes shall rule and revel in
the wealth which justly belongs to all
the people. He told how conditions in
that country brought on the successive
revolutions coming up through the re-
gime of Madero, Huerta, Carranza to
the present day with Obregon as the
hope of the people.

No country can exist declared Senor
Carvajal, which is not founded on the
principles of democracy, a government
in Lincoln's words "of the people, by
the people, and for the people." This
is the kind of a government which now
exists in Mexico he said.

Benito M. Luna, acting the consul as
master of ceremonies, made the intro-
ductory speech. He said the time had
come when co-operation is absolutely
necessary for the betterment of the
people of a country. He declared that
a citizen should keep in touch with
the affairs of his country and work
toward a higher plane always.

Loreto Herrera as president of the
"Allende" club made an address of
welcome to the consul in behalf of
his organization.

Angel Fernandez made a brief ad-
dress expressing his desire for better
co-operation of Mexican citizens and
his faith in the new government.

Joel Garcia made the keynote
speech of the occasion.

"We need to enlarge ourselves" de-
clared Mr. Garcia. "we need a broad
vision and farsightedness in solving
our social and our moral problems
which surround us, no matter where
we live.

Noble ideals only tend to moral
growth and we must educate our sons
in order to gain this strength upon
which all mighty nations are founded."
declared the speaker.

He said that a man needs prepara-
tion before he should leave his coun-
try. "By this" he said I mean that
a man should know how to take ad-
vantage of his sojourn in another
country in order that he may be im-
bued with the good qualities of that
country and in turn give them to his
country upon his return.

Mr. Garcia impressed the fact that
a great percentage of the Mexican
populace of foreign countries have
heretofore been totally ignorant that
their country provided a representative in other countries. This repre-
sentative he said, was sent for a spe-
cific purpose and that purpose was to
attend to the affairs of his people.

The speaker advised every Mexican
citizen to acquaint himself with the
consulate wherever he may be and to
register himself with the office in or-
der that he may more fully enjoy the
rights and privileges due him.

The laws of this country we live in
are most just declared Mr. Garcia and
we should learn to obey and respect
them to the letter and at the same time
gain the respect of the American
people.

The Mexican laborer has always
shown himself honorable and is a good
worker" said the speaker, and his
labor is always in demand. In return
for this labor he said it is no more
than right that he should get all that
is due him. The only safe way to
accomplish this, he declared was on
paper and not by word of mouth. Con-
tracts should be signed between em-
ployer and employee, and the consulate
is always ready to aid in this work.

Teodoro Olguin made a
brief
speech urging the co-operation of the
Texas Mexican with the people of his
own race across the border. Both are
of the same race and their customs
are alike and the Texas Mexican al-
ways sympathizes in the trials and
tribulations of the people of his an-
cestry.

Iraoda a Mexican youth made a
short talk in which he declared him-
self greatly pleased to see such a large
audience gather for such a noble pur-
pose.

Reina's orchestra composed of cello,
violin, guitar and flutes, played the
Mexican national hymn at the open-
ing and closing of the program and sev-
eral selections between speeches.
