Co. D Rates High In Combat Tactics

Company D, 3rd Battle Group, 297th Infantry, Alaska National Guard, returned home Sunday from its annual encampment at Fort Richardson.

The encampment was of two weeks duration and tested the practicability of classroom theory taught during a large portion of the training year.

Because of their proficiency in combat tactics, Company D was selected to serve as aggressor forces and proved to be an invaluable training aid for all other units of the Battle Group.

The proficiency shown was due mainly to the local unit policy of conducting a large percentage of the weekly drills in the hills of Kodiak, according to SFC William Robertson and SFC Gene Sundberg.

1st Lt. Jacob Lestenkof, an ex-Marine, is currently serving in the dual capacity of Company Commander of Company D and Battle Group assistant S-3. Lt. Lestenkof paid tribute to the intelligent leadership of his non-commissioned officers and the loyalty and willingness of his men, which, he said, accounts for the unit's outstanding performance.

The encampment climaxed this year's training season. The next season will begin in September, 1960.

Lt. Lestenkof stated that his Company needs only one thing— greater numerical strength. All men between the ages of 17-35 are encouraged to join.
