Full Text
Prison Commissioner Buffum informs us that there are now fifty-four prisoners in the Yuma boarding house provided for criminals. Crime during the last year has been on the increase if we are to take the number of convicts in Yuma prison as a basis to go by. Yavapai county will send from this term of its criminal court at least twelve more which will swell the number to nearly seventy. Good work shops should be started, convict labor utilized and the prison made self-sustaining. A large prison full of idlers, living at the expense of the tax-payers is rather an extensive luxury and one which cannot be digested readily. The treatment of prisoners at Yuma is said to be good, quarters comfortable and food wholesome, such being the case why not make the inmates work?
