JOHN C. DRISCOLL SETTLED OVER FOUR HUNDRED STRIKES IN TWO YEARS.
Former Secretary of the Associated Teaming Interests of Chicago Declares He Will Go Before the Grand Jury and Give Sensational Evidence Regarding Money Paid to Various Labor Leaders to Settle Disputes.
Chicago, June 13.—John C. Driscoll, former secretary of the associated teaming interests of Chicago, announced during the day that he would go before the grand jury and give testimony supported by documentary evidence to show that in two years, while holding the office of secretary of the associated teaming interests, he settled more than 400 strikes by the use of money with labor officials. These strikes, Mr. Driscoll asserts, affected almost every branch of industry in Chicago. He takes the position that he acted merely in the capacity of an expert who was in a position to bring about the result that the employers who were involved in labor troubles sought, namely, a peaceable adjustment.
Driscoll declares the method used by him was this: An employer, or an organization of employers, affected by a strike or likely to be, would call and ask him to use his influence to bring about an adjustment of the difficulty. The fees, according to Driscoll, paid the union men ranged from $100 to thousands of dollars, the aggregate being estimated by him at $80,000. Driscoll declares he never received a dollar of this money for his efforts in averting trouble, except from the organizations of which he was acting as secretary.
