The sudden and violent storm of wind accompanied alternately with hail, rain and snow, which set in yesterday from the N. E. did not abate in its fury until nearly at midnight, when the wind chopped round to N. W. and about half past 12 o'clock it cleared up, pleasant for winter. The wind blew almost a hurricane; learn by the British schr. Sisters, which came up this morning from Sandy Hook, that fears were entertained for the shipping in the bay; but we are happy to state from accounts from vessels close on the coast, that they all rode out the gale. Our accounts from sea are fearful will be less favorable. The steam ferry boat York, started from Powles Hook yesterday morning at half past 10 o'clock, having on board three wagons, each with two horses, and thirty passengers. Finding it impossible to reach the steam boat dock at the foot of Courtland street, she endeavored to run battery; but meeting the strong ebb tide into Whitehall slip, the east side of the battery annually increasing, she was driven out from the east river, and the wind continuing, through the narrows, where she met the flood tide, Castle-Williams down through the fort Diamond, about half past 4 o'clock and was enabled to make a harbor under yesterday afternoon. Here she landed the passengers and horses, and about 2 o'clock this morning put her machinery in motion and came up to town uninjured. We ought not to omit to state, that during the most violent part of the gale, and while the steam boat was drifting between Bedlow's Island and Robbins' Reef, at the mercy of the seas, Mr. Vanderbilt's packet ferry boat Dread, went off to her assistance, and succeeded, at great risk, in taking from her 12 passengers, and landing them at Whitehall.
