SONNET TO PITY:

When grief o'erhears the lab'ring breast,
When fortune frowns, and friends depart,
When slighted love disturbs our rest,
And rankles in the wounded heart:--
What healing balm, what soothing power,
Can aught impart of joy or peace?
What view illume the gloomy hour,
Or grant from woe a kind release?
Pity! celestial, mild-ey'd maid!
'Tis thine to chase those clouds away;
Thy light dispels the darkest shade,
And beams around the heav'nly ray.
Descend from heav'n immortal guest.
Dwell, ever dwell within my breast.
