In New York— A Probable New Route to Canada,
New York, Feb. 21.—The purchase of the Elmira, Cortland and Northern by Lehigh Valley may mean the extension of the line from Camden to Watertown, and thence to Clayton, the gateway of the Thousand Islands. The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg has been profitable to the New York Central, although the rental was high. Should this exclusive traffic, which is very heavy in summer, be divided with the Lehigh, New York Central would lose considerable. The Lehigh could readily connect with the Canadian Pacific, giving that road a short line into New York, just as the Canadian Pacific comes into Boston with its own cars from Newport, Vt., over the Boston and Maine. The Canadian Pacific would like a direct New York entrance, and one might be easily established. There is, therefore, some significance in the recent purchases of the Maxwell-Corbin interest in Elmira, Cortland and Northern by Lehigh Valley.
