NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
The Nobel prizes come from
the income of a $9,000,000 fund
left by Swedish industrialist
Alfred B. Nobel in 1895 for
those who have conferred the
greatest benefit to mankind"
in five fields--physics, chem-
istry, medicine, literature and
peace. The awarding bodies,
which were stipulated by Nobel
receive
nominations from
persons
prominent
in each
field, including past prize win-
ners. Last week three awards
(each of about $48,000) were
announced- two peace prizes
by the Nobel committee of the
Norwegian Parliament and a
literature prize by the Swed-
ish Academy.
The 1960 peace prize, which
was not awarded last year,
went to Albert Luthuli, a Zulu
chief in South Africa, who
has fought his government's
policy of apartheid, or racial
separation. Some observers
thought the award reflected
Scandinavian resentment
of
charges by South African For-
eign Minister Eric H. Louw
in a UN. speech last year
that Norway and Sweden dis-
criminated against their popu-
lations of Lapplanders.
