A meeting of the merchants and traders of this city was held last evening at the Tontine Coffee-house, Cortlandt Ray, Esq. in the chair, and Mr. John Ferrers, Secretary.
The chairman informed the meeting, it was called to take into consideration the memorial of the Philadelphia merchants to Congress, praying for the repeal of the non-importation act. A motion was made and carried, that a committee of 21 gentlemen should be appointed to take the subject into consideration.
There was a diversity of opinion among the gentlemen present. Some were against petitioning Congress at all, after what had taken place in the House of Representatives, on the reading of the memorial of the merchants of Philadelphia. Others conceive that a memorial from this city, followed by remonstrances from other cities, would be treated with greater respect—and as the time was short when the law would go into operation, they wished the committee to have the power to draw up a memorial without delay.
After the committee had been named, the meeting adjourned.
