The Seventh district congressional
convention, held in this city yesterday,
was a large, harmonious and enthusi-
astic assemblage of men, who responded
to the Republican sentiment of the dis-
trict by nominating by acclamation a
candidate who will make an aggressive
campaign—Charles L. Henry, of Ander-
son. A man of high character, of ex-
cellent ability, thoroughly respected
where he is best known, in the vigor of
early manhood, an able and convincing
public speaker, he is admirably fitted to
make the fight upon Mr. Bynum which
every intelligent Republican demands.
Mr. Henry did not seek the nomination,
because the candidacy, even if success-
ful, is scarcely to be desired by a young
man in a successful business. He has
accepted because, with thousands of
Republicans in the district, he believes
it is an imperative duty to make a vig-
orous and determined campaign against
Mr. Bynum. This Mr. Henry is amply
qualified to do. In the city and county
where Mr. Henry has resided for years,
and where he is well-known, he has the
respect and confidence of his fellow-
citizens, regardless of party. The Bul-
letin, an independent paper in Ander-
son, in a recent issue said:
Nothing could add more strength to the
Republican county, State and national
tickets than the nomination of Charles L.
Henry, of this city, for Congress by the Re-
publicans of the Seventh district. He
would get just about every vote in Ander-
son.
Some time since, when Mr. Henry was
spoken of as a candidate, the only re-
gret of a Democratic paper in Anderson
was that his candidacy would jeopardize
the Democratic county ticket, thus de-
claring his popularity in Madison county.
Mr. Henry has taken an active part in the
development of the industries of his
city. He is a business man, and in
no sense a professional statesman. He
believes that the future prosperity of
this locality depends upon the develop-
ment and success of its varied indus-
tries. Consequently he is an out-and-
out protectionist. In Mr. Henry the Re-
publicans and all those who desire the
industrial prosperity of this district have
an intelligent and available candidate.
If they will give him that earnest sup-
port which is his due, and zealously take
a part in the canvass to which he will
devote his time, Mr. Bynum can be
beaten.
