Full Text
With the state auditing board authorizing an overdraft of $300,000 in the general fund, checks were being mailed Friday to employees of state institutions for December salaries.
The auditing board approved the transfer of $300,000 of other state funds to the general fund for payment of the salaries in anticipation of tax collections, which are expected to be sufficient in the next two months to absorb the overdraft.
The December payroll for institutions amounts to slightly over $115,000.
There is pending in the legislature a bill that would divert the state bridge funds to the general fund, which would add nearly $300,000 to the general fund and, in the opinion of state officials absorb the deficit that now exists.
The auditing board will meet Thursday to consider further steps in payment of salaries. When the January payroll of state institutions, totaling about $103,000 monthly, will be paid has not yet been determined.
