OTTAWA, (AP) -- Eight Canadian military men -- including Air Vice Marshal Robert C. Ripley -- were killed Friday night when an RCAF bomber apparently exploded in the air and crashed 12 miles from Ottawa.

The twin-engine B25, on the last leg of a flight from Churchill in northern Manitoba, plunged to the ground at the edge of a small wooded area and burst into flames. There were no survivors.

Ripley, 43, of Lethbridge, Alta., was chief of the RCAF's Air Materiel Command.
