The Catholics and the Black Race. -

At the recent Plenary Council at Baltimore, one of the principal subjects for discussion was the status of the black race in the States, and in the church. It was the uniform opinion of the Southern bishops that there was a very wide field for missionary effort, and that the church would be justified in a liberal expenditure of men and money in gathering the scattering sheep into the Catholic fold. It was also agreed that there should be entire liberty of political opinion among clerical and lay members of the church, a permission which will greatly inure to the cause of freedom.
