Full Text

The National Republican and Landholders Prox. The publication of this Prox occasions no inconsiderable fluttering among the friends of Gov. Fenner. They see in Dr. Messer, a powerful antagonist, and fear to put his Excellency's popularity to the test. A fair, respectable and vigorous opposition, must defeat the re-election of the present incumbent. From all parts of the State the voice of the people is in favor of Dr. Messer, and when we draw a comparison between the two gentlemen, as it will be our duty to do in the course of the contest, the people will wonder how they ever came to allow his Excellency to retain Gubernatorial power unto this day.

It is yet too early to commence the campaign, or we should publish a few of the many letters already addressed to us on this subject. The people now know that Dr. Messer is at the head of a Prox; let them consider the subject well and there can be little doubt he will be elected by a handsome majority.—Providence Journal.
