Extract of a letter from a young man

on board the English Whale ship

dated Ternat roads, March 9, 1821, to

his mother in New York.

"On the 20th November last, at about

daylight, Capt. Hammatt (of Boston) of

the English whale ship Greenwich, was

killed, together with the second and third

mate and three of his men by a Malay

that he got from Batagoda. No one can

tell what were his motives for doing it.

Mr. Gibson, his chief mate, has charge

of the ship, the other whale ships having

made him up a ship's company."
