Full Text

Extract of a letter from New York, April 8.

'Yesterday it was reported in town, that three men of war were arrived at Sandy Hook. One of them came up in the morning to the watering place, near Staten island (said to be the Viper) and sent her boat ashore with 12 men. A number of our riflemen being there, made an attack on them, and took them all prisoners, wounding one. The ship began a heavy fire at 9 o'clock, and continued until 3 A. M. and then was obliged to cut her cable, quit her station, and drop down below the Narrows, without loosing a topsail, on account of our men picking the seamen off. We have since taken up their cable and anchor. The ship Dutchefs of Gordon, where governour Tryon and a number of his associates are, left the North river last Saturday, and is gone down, either to the Phenix or the Hook. A number of our guns were hauled to the fort and battery yesterday, and we are preparing as fast as possible to receive the gentry if they come up.'
