Full Text

Gen. Taylor's Cabinet.—Our readers are aware that the Whig members of Congress from Pennsylvania, a short time since, united in recommending to the notice of the President elect, Hon. Andrew Stewart, for the office of Secretary of the Treasury. We have nothing to say against the high claims of Mr. S. and have not the slightest doubt that he would prove himself, in the event of his selection, every way equal to the burdens of the office. We are well aware, also, that it is the intention of Gen. Taylor, as it undoubtedly is his duty, to select his cabinet with reference to a representation in it, of the various sections of the Union, and that no State has a deeper interest in such selection than Pennsylvania, or is more fully entitled to a representative. Yet we enter our protest against this method of bringing the name of a distinguished individual before the notice of the President, because from the semi-official nature of the proceeding, it wears the appearance of an attempt at dictation. That such was not the intention of the movers, we are willing to believe, yet that such will be the impression of the public, we feel assured will not admit of a doubt. In such a light it is already regarded by the Whig press of the country, and the dissatisfaction which it has created, has been very freely expressed.—Rich. Whig.
