Full Text

Mr. RIND,

SIR,

The sentiments of America are so well known on the subject of LIBERTY, that, delusion apart, they will surely be right. To prevent the operation of this mischief, you will oblige many of your customers, by publishing the following lines; which appear well calculated to prevent the deception that may otherways take place, from the ministerial promise of repealing the American revenue acts, at the next meeting of Parliament. But these lines, being not quite obvious to the understanding of every reader; if the learned President of our college would be pleased to furnish your next Gazette with a spirited translation of them, he would much serve and oblige his country.

My reason for calling on the worthy President, arises from this historic truth; that liberty and learning have been found together; that the slavery of the body necessarily enslaves the mind, and produces in RELIGION, belief without examination; and in GOVERNMENT, submission without law.

Quid miri, quæ tanta insania Cives,
Creditis avectos hostes? Aut ulla putatis
Dona carere dolis Danaûm? sic notus Ulixes?
Aut hoc inclusi ligno occultantur Achivi.
Aut aliquis latet error: equo ne credite, Teucri.
Quicquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes.
