SIR,
After I had closed my letter to you, which I had continued from the second to the fifth instant, I received one from capt. Guion, of which I enclose you a copy. and an extract of a letter from Mr. Daniel Clarke, to his nephew.
Last evening arrived here a boat from the Illinois. I have received the following information from a Mr. Kenner, who came passenger. That he separated from the detachment under the command of Major Kerrey, on Sunday the 1st instant, at one o'clock, P. M. he supposes between five and six leagues above the Walnut Hills; that as the Illinois boat had a sail, and the wind was fair, they left Major Kerrey, and halted at the Walnut Hills early in the evening; that the works had not been destroyed, but appeared to be in good order; that major Kerrey must have arrived at his station early on Monday morning. The detachment left the Chickasaw Bluffs on the 19th of last month, and had been detained by contrary winds and bad weather. Mr. Kenner observed that the Major's boats were old and that he was therefore obliged to proceed with the greatest caution.
The Spanish troops from Natchez had arrived at Baton Rouge. Mr. Kenner saw them there on the fourth inst.
I have the honor to be, &c.
CONSTANT FREEMAN, JUN.
The Secretary of War.
Extract of a letter from Captain Isaac Guion to Major Constant Freeman dated Natchez, March 27th, 1798.
"Should this find you in New-Orleans, it will be handed to you by a Mr. Stewart Wilkins from Kentucky, brother to our Quarter Master General; he left the Chickasaw Bluff on the 15th instant, where capt. Peirce had been thirteen days, and Major Kerrey had not yet moved, and I have reason to believe that he is not yet arrived at the Walnut Hills, which place was evacuated on the night of the 23d-and Friday next, the 30th, is the day fixed for the same operation to take place here."
Extract of a letter from Mr. Daniel Clarke, of Clarksville, to Daniel Clarke, Jun. of New-Orleans, dated March 31, 1798.
"The American flag was hoisted at the Fort of Natchez the 30th instant, and Mr. Ellicott will be here on the 2d of next month."
