Washington Dispatch Indicates Structure Will
Be Practically Doubled to Facilitate
Mail Handling, Ease Congestion

Washington, Aug. 14. - (P) -

Treasury procurement officials estimated tentatively Wednesday that extension and remodeling work on the Bismarck, N. D., postoffice, as authorised under the second deficiency appropriation, would cost between $200,000 and $270,000.

Bismarck's postoffice building will be practically doubled in size, with work to begin soon, a Washington dispatch indicated Wednesday.

Included in 351 building projects to cost $59,868,000, according to the Associated Press, are enlargements of the postoffices at Bismarck and Grand Forks.

The exact nature of the extensions was not indicated, but local postal officials said they had asked for an addition which would be practically as large as the present structure and expressed the belief that this may have been granted.

Inspectors from Washington were here in July and saw for themselves the fact that working space is not large enough to properly handle the mail. In addition, there has been a tremendous demand for office space from federal departments and bureaus which the building was too small to meet.

Assistant Postmaster Harry Larson said formal request had been made for an addition which would be 50 feet wide and three stories high and which would extend along the north side of the present building. The structure would presumably be faced with Indiana limestone, as is the present building.

Plans for an addition to the post-office here have been under consideration for more than a year. The first proposal was to enlarge the work room and construct a new loading platform, but an order for this project was rescinded and a new study made which may result in the larger addition.

Inspectors for the postoffice department will be here Monday, Larson said. He expected to learn at that time definite details of the proposed construction.

Other improvements to be financed under the appropriation, according to the Associated Press dispatch, are those to buildings at Aberdeen and Gregory, S. D.; Breckenridge, Minn.; Missoula and Great Falls, Mont.
