FINE SPIRIT IS SHOWN BY MANY AT DEFENSE MEET

Opinion Is that Air Raid Alerts Should Continue

The public meeting of the Civilian Defense Board held last night in the Grade School auditorium proved successful in more ways than one. Those present expressed their confidence in the Board's ability to manage the civilian defense affairs, and at the same time, expressed a willingness and an interest to abide by the Board's rulings. Secondly. the 125 persons present benefited by viewing a movie which showed the vital information of how to deal with incendiary bombs.

Frank A. Metcalf. Director of the Civilian Defense Unit. presided. The movie was shown twice-before the meeting opened. and at the conclusion.

Director Metcalf opened the meeting by explaining the objectives of the Civilian Defense Unit, and those present heard reports from various members of the Board and other heads of the various divisions of the Civilian Defense Unit. The meeting was then thrown open to discussion from the floor.

Weekly Alerts

Several citizens advocated the continuance of weekly air raid practice drills with some present expressing opinion that the drills should be called without any previous warning. When a vote was taken on this. however. only one person voted for unannounced drills.

It was the unanimous opinion of those present, after much discussion was held, that the Board should decide the time of the drills as has been the custom in the previous practices.

U. S. Attorney William A. Holzheimer wound the meeting up with a fiery. impromptu speech in which he condemned the "rocking chair generals" and backroom critics of the Civilian Defense Unit and expressed opinion that the people of Juneau were behind the Civilian Defense Board all the way. Said Mr. Holzheimer:

"You can't please everyone.

You're doing us a favor to assume the leadership. It's up to you to do your duty and give the orders. It's up to us to obey them." He was addressing Mr. Metcalf. The audience applauded Mr. Holzheimer's talk whole-heartedly.
