ONE "WEEK"
There are so many "weeks" that they would step on one another's toes if they were that kind so many of them that a good deal of ridicule of all sorts of "weeks" has been aroused - but one of the best "weeks" is "Be Kind to Animals Week."
It runs from April 13 to April 18 - and April 19 is Humane Sunday.
As a London paper points out, the fact that one takes an interest in kindness to animals does not necessarily mean that one is oblivious to the cruelties practiced against human beings. Being kind to animals ought to make one kind to humans as well, and interested in changing the conditions which make for cruelty to humans.
City people do not as a rule have much direct contact with animals - perhaps not as much as it would be good for them to have. Humans could learn a good deal from animals. They could learn, for instance, to do only what is good for them. Animals, having no intellect, follow their unperverted instincts. Selfish as these instincts are, and often resulting in cruelty of animal to animal, they at least do not result in perversions or what are known as "bad habits." Man is the only animal that has bad habits.
His instincts are untrustworthy because they have been supplanted by intellect, and the intellect is used largely for purposes harmful to its possessor and others. The biggest job man has ahead of him is to learn to use his intellect for good purposes - that is, for purposes which will make for his own higher development and that of others.
Even though city people do not often come into direct contact with the lower animals, they do come into indirect contact with them, and can, if they will, refrain from contributing to the unnecessary killing of them and to brutality toward them.
