For the Hillsborough Recorder,

Much needed at

Orange County.

We come forward to remind you of the importance of standing by your ticket, and using the most honorable and influential means, as in former days, to ensure its success. The first Thursday in August (to-morrow) is the day for you to exert yourselves. You have out a full and fairly nominated ticket. Messrs. Turner, Guthrie and Patterson are nice men, good Whigs, of the Henry Clay stamp. Unfortunately, two years ago there was not a full nominated ticket out; but Josiah Turner, Jr., came out as an independent candidate, arguing equal taxation, and was elected over the Democratic champion by the largest majority ever given a Senator in Orange. Orange Whigs, again you behold him before you as a candidate. You have tried him. You know him. It was he that winged the Democracy in Orange two years ago, and now is the accepted time for you to rally to his support. Let him appear as one of the most brilliant stars that sparkle in old Orange. Brother Whigs, forget not Messrs. Guthrie and Patterson. Notwithstanding they have had only one opponent around this campaign, Maj. Patterson deserves your suffrages. He has fought bravely in your behalf, not only in times of rejoicing but in times of need; now you are called on, man to man, to rally to his support. Whigs, show the Democracy of Orange a vote that will open their eyes. There is yet a still higher officer for you to cast your votes for. I mean the office of Sheriff. You have out a substantial Whig, a gentleman of high standing, John B. Leathers. He represented you in the Legislature in 1844 and 1846, by the largest majority that was ever given in Orange. He has been true to the Whig cause ever since, not only by casting his ballot but by using all his influence in your behalf, and now he appears before you as a candidate for the office above mentioned. Now, as true men to the Whig cause be on the election ground early, and work faithfully for the principles which you advocate. With these exertions we will warrant Whiggery to have the ascendancy in old Orange. Last of all I will mention, perhaps unnecessarily, that you will cast your ballot for Governor. John Pool has canvassed this State, advocating the principles which you term just, honest, and fair. He has devoted his time to the Whig cause, and made speeches all over the State on the practicability and justice of the ad valorem system of taxation. He has been the representative of the people of Pasquotank in the Legislature more than once, and they acknowledge but few as his superior. In one word, he has used all honorable and fair means of raising Whiggery to the ascendancy which it should have had all along. And now to the Whigs of Orange we appeal, as true men, to come and fight the battle of justice and honesty against all foes, and then we have no doubt but our ticket will again be conqueror, and with a loud applause we can say triumphantly that just and fair principles will reign in spite of Democracy.
