The Jackson meeting which was to have been held on Monday in Fairfax co., we learn, proved abortive. It was, however to have been attempted again yesterday— but we have not heard the result.
In reply to 'H.' I have barely to observe, that the excitement which he has reference to, as existing in King street in favor of two young men, has, for its cause and origin not only the well founded confidence, as respects their ability to perform the duties of their office of the merchants of King street, as well as of many of the lower end of town, but the respect and esteem of all those who are acquainted with them, for their independence of principle and undeviating integrity. As to the necessity of making new laws by way of amending old ones, no good grounds of argument to support such an act of legislative authority, can be adduced, as far as connected with the inspectors; that the dealers in flour wish their old inspectors, is true, but not with the motives and intentions it is 'sincerely hoped, that actuated the minds and produced pecuniary benefits to some of our citizens about twenty or thirty years since, whereby Monsieur suffered, without having even the solitary consolation of knowing he did so fairly. As to certain practices; and enforcing the law to which 'H.' alludes let him look back to the period referred to, and remember certain practices, and as to enforcing the law with regard to the inspection of flour, it can be well attested to, and confirmed by the merchants of King-street, and also by the 'candid and unbiassed dealers in that article living on the wharf, that it has universally and rigorously been enforced. To conclude, however, family connexions, or interested motives, should never induce an honest man to swerve from that due line of propriety which ought to govern his actions. The character of those two young men, 'H.' so malignantly refers to, is well known and can stand the test of the closest scrutiny; their ability to fill the respective offices is undoubted, and if justice is done, their election is secure— By way of conclusion, the old adage here sufficiently illustrates itself, those who are most apt to suspect guilt in others, are most apt to convince by their own conduct.
