MR. WEBSTER—It is humiliating enough in all conscience to witness the undeserved and unworthy personal attacks upon the Secretary of State by too many of those who, one short year ago, were aiding him as noble among the noblest. But to see a single individual of a Whig Congress and any portion of the Whig press, who but yesterday would have made him stand against the world, now descending to the ignoble position of cast-off filth gatherers from the Van Buren gutters and sewers of the last election, might well turn the stomach of the blindest partisan. That a Whig member of Congress, Mr. H. S. Lane of Indiana, who had throughout the whole canvass of 1840 been loud in his contempt to despise the loco foco charge against Mr. Webster of being an enemy of his country during the late war, should have the effrontery to taunt his brother Whigs on that score by his despicable reference to that calumny, is utterly incomprehensible, and were the fact not well authenticated, almost incredible. And then, to have that speech referred to by any of the leading Whig press as "able and distinguished" (oh shame, shame where is thy blush).
