What is this article about?
The Whig party suffered a defeat in the Michigan state election on November 2, with Locofocos securing majorities in Detroit (about 250), Wayne County (300-400), and likely the governorship and House of Representatives, though the Senate might be saved.

Our city circulation of Saturday morning contained the following letter from Detroit, copied from the Cleveland Herald:—O S. Jour.
DETROIT, Tuesday eve. Nov. 2.
The Whigs are beaten in city and State. The polls are just closed. The result here proves what we may expect elsewhere. More than 400 Whigs staid at home.
The Locofoco majority in the city will be about 250. The county will give some three or four hundred majority.
The State will show up an equally disastrous result both on Governor and House.
There is a bare possibility that we have carried the Senate.
We have but few additional returns. A slip from the Detroit Free Press of Wednesday gives unofficial returns from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, showing an equally "disastrous result" as in the city of Detroit.
The Detroit Advertiser, (Whig) of Wednesday gives up the State, and says—
"That the result will be in the interior of the State, we cannot, of course, speak positively; but it is our opinion that the same apathy has produced like results there. Vetoes—Bank suspensions—State Scrip depreciations—retention of Locofocos in office—and other similar merciful measures have, we doubt not as Dennis the hangman says in Barnaby Rudge, "worked us off" We have, therefore, no hope either of the Governor or House. The Senate may, possibly, be saved. But even of this there is no certainty. What the Locofocos never could have accomplished themselves, the Whigs have helped them to accomplish. But never mind,
the blessings of a minority remain with us—and those blessings we would not swap for all the majorities in Christendom."
