Full Text

The Surratt trial is progressing and witnesses were examined principally to prove that John H. Surratt was in the city on the 14th of April 1865, the day of the assassination of President Lincoln. Sergeant Joseph M. Dye was subjected to a rigid cross examination, and his testimony at the assassination trials was read and compared with that given on this trial. He was throughout very positive in his assertions of Surratt's presence here on the night of the assassination, and insisted that it was John H. Surratt whom he saw by the light of the gas-lamp in front of Ford's Theatre. A number of other witnesses were examined, and it is thought that the prosecution will occupy the whole week and part of the next with their testimony. The case will probably continue for three weeks.
