Racial and religious tolerance is a practical bread and butter matter to working people and unions. Considered from this standpoint its attainment will be approached more rapidly than from any other.
It is a matter closely related to full employment, the two working one upon the other. Depressions find discriminated-against minorities the first out of work. They are thus made willing to work for lower wages and are used to beat down the wage level.
Even in comparatively "good times" there are those of the minorities who do not have jobs or are so underpaid for the work that they do as to be a force to keep down wages. The employed fear this job competition and the fear breeds hate and prejudice.
At the same time prejudice keeps the forces of labor, economically and politically, from uniting in full strength by which decent wages and full employment could be insisted upon.
The need for working people to realize this has become urgent. United economic and political strength is needed now and will be needed in the postwar era as never before.
This is not just a national crisis. Great new forces in international affairs are looming—China, India and South America. These people will be scrutinizing us carefully to determine whether we are friendly. Our past performances on the race question have given rise to question.
A friendly, cooperative world will be one in which the working man will prosper. A world of distrust will be one building toward new unemployment and more wars.
