The Orphans' Fair.—The fair for the benefit of the Orphan Asylum was inaugurated at the Exchange Building last evening, a goodly number of persons being present, but not as many as the noble object in view should have drawn there. The Council Chamber presented a beautiful appearance, as if the magic wand of some fairy queen had changed a dreary scene to one of exquisite loveliness. The Sodality table, presided over by Mesdames Tighe and Simms presented a very neat and tasteful appearance, as did that in charge of Mrs. Owens, and the one under the supervision of Mrs. Kelly. Looking from one to the other it was difficult to tell which was the most complete and beautiful in its arrangements, especially when the attention of the beholder was likely to be diverted by the lovely forms, bright eyes and witching smiles of the many representatives of the youth and beauty of Memphis passing to and fro, while a fine band discoursed appropriate airs. An elegant gold watch and chain is to be given to the young lady receiving the largest number of votes. Several names were enrolled last night, the vote so far, being slight, and Miss Kate Worsham being ahead. A fine desk is also to be voted to the most popular newspaper. The refreshment department was attended to by Mrs. Larkin, whose judgment was extolled by the many who tried some of the delicacies and pronounced them fit to please the most fastidious. Three telegraph offices were in operation, with wires, etc., dispatches being sent that brought forth many a hearty laugh. The post office was not in operation last night on account of some accident on the railroad delaying the mails. It will be in running order to-night, Misses Kate and Fannie Baker officiating as chiefs of the department. An excellent Schomaker piano is to be raffled for at two dollars a chance. The fair will be continued during the week, and we hope our liberal hearted citizens will remember the orphaned children who need meat, bread, clothing and fuel to protect them against the chilly blasts of winter.
Go, and take your friends.
