WHAT IT TAKES TO GUARD A CITY.—The present police force of New York numbers eleven hundred and fifty men, a small army. The pay of each private is $700, lieutenant $800, captain $1,000 per annum. In addition to these, there are about one hundred men employed to light the street lamps at a cost of $33,000. Thirty men to ring fire alarms, at the cost of about $18,000. Twelve fire wardens, twenty-two health-wardens, and over one hundred street inspectors, dock officers, etc. The entire cost of the police department is $820,000, and, including the entire police and city judicial departments, the citizens of Gotham pay a million of dollars annually to keep matters straight.
