Full Text

Parnassian Spring.

The NEW YEAR's WISH.

For Seventeen Hundred and Eighty-nine.

I.

Hail happy year! with prospects fair replete,
May great Columbia prove the envied seat
Of learning, piety and peace;
Grant us, great God, that discord cease to flow,
And ev'ry blessing on this land bestow,
That can its greatest good increase.

II.

May Government, the Villain's greatest check,
Be stablish'd firm; to save a sinking wreck,
And dignify our Union State;
Let ev'ry human heart expand with joy,
Justice and virtue, ev'ry Soul up-buoy,
And banish artifice, deceit.

III.

May faithful Rulers guard our sacred rights,
And each of wisdom, drop their usual mites
To aid the glorious Cause:
Let this New Year, an Era new commence
In which we raise a bulwark of defence,
By Union's happy laws.

IV.

If to these things our private good unite,
Then will proud Europe view us with delight,
Tho' interest clash so near.
What we require of men let us perform,
In virtue be sincere, in friendship warm
To th' advent of another Year.
